Blood Battle: Damian Wayne (Robin) vs Terry McGinnis (Batman Beyond)

Back when Bruce Wayne was out of commission as a result of Final Crisis, there was a battle for the cowl. All of the Bat family for the title of Batman and eventually, Dick Grayson won out, as Damian became his Robin. However, there was no blood lost in that battle. Now, we pit the true sons of Batman against each other.

This week’s matchup: Terry McGinnis aka Batman Beyond VS Damian, the Son of Batman!

The Rules:

We’re putting both Terry and Damian at their best, even though they are not the same age. Both are relatively young in their superhero career and with separate backgrounds, both work with Bruce Wayne directly, and even though Damian becomes a future Batman in a more apocalyptic era, we’re gonna have him as Robin.

Sorry, Bloody Batman. You have to sit this fight out.
Sorry, Bloody Batman. You have to sit this fight out.

This is because there is no record of Terry working on his own as an older Batman, so their fight has to be comparable to the time under the guidance of Batman.

Damian Wayne

Talia Al Ghul and Bruce Wayne have spent plenty of time together, both as allies and enemies. However, when Bruce discovers he was drugged during one of their rendezvous, he comes face to face with something more frightening than some of the rogues he fights: Bruce discovers he has an illegitimate son with Talia. Only 10 years old and raised by the League of Assassins, Damian leads armies, uses swords, studies people and habits, and sadly, has killed.

The boy is ruthless.
The boy is ruthless.

Bruce both loves the boy and a darker reflection of himself and hates how he’s been raised. Taking him under his wing, Batman fights crime with his own Robin, going through the ups and downs of raising a child and trying to protect yet another Robin from the madness in Gotham. Although so young, Robin’s training both with the league and with Bruce Wayne has given him the ability to severely cripple thugs and the crime in Gotham.

Small, but not weak.
Small, but not weak.

Terry McGinnis

In the animated series universe, Batman has given up fighting crime at around late 40s to 50s. During one fight, Bruce’s body fails him, and to stop a murder, his only option is to reach for a gun. Frightened by his own desperation, he shuts down all Batman operations, to “never again” sink that low. Years pass, and a futuristic Gotham has corporate greed, more psychos, and a crime surge that the Gotham Police Department cannot keep up with. Enter Terry McGinnis, a sweet but roughly raised man in Gotham. He looses his father and look to Mr. Wayne for guidance. Instead, the work out a deal so that Terry can use the updated Batman suit and Bruce can guide him via comm links. What follows is the career of one of the most iconic Batmen. Terry’s suit is also equipped with cloaking, batarangs, a suit that can produce damaging shock waves, rocket boots, wings, and many more tools that have been created as a result of Bruce Wayne’s tenure as Batman. What makes Terry interesting is that he was adopted. Revealed in Justice League Unlimited’s “Epilogue” episode, Amanda Waller explains to Terry that he had been created using DNA from none other than Bruce Wayne.

FIGHT!

Interesting enough, both boys were raised pretty rough. Damian’s training has given him a sense of royalty, but also has hardened him into not trusting anyone. Terry’s upbringing is in an even darker Gotham, where gangs of Jokers create chaos in the name of the prince of crime himself. In the odd scenario where we can put these two heroes head to head in a single timeline, Terry would fall prey to underestimating not only Robin, but to taking sympathy on a young boy. Most do this, and Damian takes advantage to surprise and subdue Terry. However, Damian can’t plan on the future, and Terry can usually outwit people using new gadgets. Size does matter, so physically, Terry can take and give out a bigger beating. Plus, Batman Beyond can use him environment better, both having fought people in the League of Assassins and with his creativeness in using the tools of the Bat. Damian’s abilities are never in question, but his rashness and stubbornness usually compromise him, leaving Terry to take this fight.

Blood Battles: Hulk Vs She-Hulk

Have you ever been at odds with family? Someone who you’ve grown up so close to and end up being in constant battles with? Nerdswole is here to put those battles on a bigger scale, by pitting two famous fictional siblings and seeing who comes out the victor. It gets gritty, it gets personal, and as we dive into the histories of the family, we make our nerdy dreams come true.

This weeks matchup: She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters) vs Hulk (Bruce Banner)

I am incredibly disturbed by what David Goyer has said about She-Hulk and Martian Manhunter. However, this is not a rant on the terrible things that were said. This is to pit the beloved Jennifer Walters, the sensational She-Hulk, against her cousin, Bruce Banner aka The Incredible Hulk and, more importantly, celebrate our heroes as they were meant to be. It’s to talk about Hulk vs She-Hulk. Let’s start with the big guy.

Bruce Banner is a renown physicist who is working on a gamma bomb for the military. However, during a test, Bruce sees a young man, Rick Jones, travel onto the testing site. Rushing to save Rick, Bruce becomes exposed to the deadly radiation. Bruce faces a fate worse than death as he endures the exposure of the gamma radiation. Under the stress and anxiety he experiences, Bruce transforms into the uncontrollable Hulk.

Becoming an enraged super-human menace, Hulk has superior strength, stamina, healing, and immunities to many diseases. His simple mind is a seperate persona from the genius Banner, and Hulk tends to act like an enraged child more than hero to Earth. Many of Hulk’s adventures involve him on the run from the Military, who wish to study/kill the Hulk. The wildcard here is that while Bruce Banner is a rational, yet reserved and distressed, man, the Hulk is uncontrollable for the most part and causes damage to both friends and foes. Hulk has fought enemies from unknown lands, teamed up with the Avengers, even battling Wolverine, and yet for all of his struggles, his still remains a hero to some and a fugitive for others.

From fighting the strongest and deadly foes, dealing with friends turning into Hulks, being on the run from everyone, and having to fight to earn respect from his peers, Bruce Bannner hasn’t really had an easy go in life. His rage continually fuels the Hulk and Bruce continues to work for humanity as a scientist while keeping his monster-half under control. Half of Hulk’s greatest battles are with himself. What Bruce makes up for with intelligence, Hulk equally backs up with his fists. The angrier Hulk gets, the stronger he becomes, and for many, that strength is limitless.

And now for the woman who breaks more bones than hearts…

Jennifer Walters is a lawyer who was shot by an enemy of her father’s. Luckily, her cousin Bruce Banner was in town and was able to give her a blood transfusion in time. The radiated blood from Bruce worked with Jennifer to give her the powers of the male Hulk, while giving her some noticeable changes. She practices law to this day and defends cases of both human and superhuman alike, not to mention her fair share of mutants. You’re likely to see her in the same court as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil, as they both work cases together and argue against one another in high profile cases.

She-Hulk has the same rage induced powers as her cousin, but remains on the more controlled side of things. There are times where She-Hulk will transition easily from rage monster to simple human. She-Hulk is Jennifer’s version of confidence, so sometimes she will retain her She-Hulk form during ordinary activities.

There are other times where she is completely susceptible to her emotions and the anger overcomes any rationality or compassion.

When She-Hulk is concerned, it is as if there is a second hulk. Much like her cousin, Jennifer’s emotions control the extent of her power and while she is in more control than Bruce, she has the potential for great destruction as well.

FIGHT!

While Hulk topples nearly everything he runs into, we’re talking about his own blood in a more controlled state. She-Hulk’s powers grow in the same nature as Hulk’s and on top of that, Jennifer’s own training is accelerated when in the She-Hulk state. She-Hulk is also a trained combatant, who is more nimble and acrobatic than Hulk, and is capable of maneuvers that Hulk’s savage mind and bulky body could not perform.

In terms of power, however, it’s hard to ignore Hulk’s strength, anger, and sheer size. Heck, he’s lifted Mjolnr. Not just almost in Avengers.

For real.

hulk-and-mjolnir

If we’re talking pure strength, I’d say Hulk would win. However, She-Hulk is a trained fighter who could throw one punch and level a city if she wanted. This one’s a toss up.

So with all this to consider, we’re going to think about this for a bit. And for all you readers, let us know. Vote down below and next Blood Battle, we’ll reveal the winner for this matchup. Thanks for reading and make sure to check out our great articles here on Nerdswole!

As for the winner of the last blood battle, it’s the leader of the X-Men, Cyclops, defeating his younger brother Havok.

Blood Battle: Cyclops vs Havok

Have you ever been at odds with family? Someone who you’ve grown up so close to and end up being in constant battles with? Nerdswole is here to put those battles on a bigger scale, by pitting two famous fictional siblings and seeing who comes out the victor. It gets gritty, it gets personal, and as we dive into the histories of the family, we make our nerdy dreams come true.

This weeks matchup: Scott Summers/Cyclops VS Alex Summers/Havok

So, yeah. X-Men. There’s a lot of them. Family everywhere. Mutants everywhere. The eternal struggle symbolizing racism, stereotypes, and embodying outcasts everywhere. X-Men is a franchise that has a lot going for it, but for this battle we’re narrowing it down to one of the first known mutants.

Enter Scott Summers, aka Cyclops.

Scott Summers.
He shoots beams from his eyes.

Cyclops, along with Beast, Ice Man, Angel, and Marvel Girl, led the original X-Men team as the fought Magneto, The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and plenty of other foes from the early days of the Marvel Universe. Cyclops has been the leader of countless X-Men. His place in front of the group is only trumped by Captain America’s place at the lead for the Avengers. Scott’s leadership skills  are top-notch, with his special mutant ability (energy beam projection through his eyes) being a compliment to his inspirational leadership. He’s been at the heels of Xavier’s dream right up to the here and now. Lately, however, he’s sporting a new look.

Cyclops12_zps27917b84
I’m still trying to figure out how he sees out of that.

Recently, he’s been charged with the assassination of Charles Xavier, which he did under the influence of the Phoenix force during the Avengers VS X-Men limited series. Sent to prison and then rescued by fellow Uncanny X-Men Magneto and Magik (yup, Magneto is on team X-Men), Scott established a renegade X-Men group to contrast Wolverine’s team and also rescue mutants with more of a revolution as opposed to establishing peace. He’s a bit off from what we’ve grown up with, but is still the same leader with a dedication for mutant equality that we’ve seen from the very beginning. He cares for his fellow mutants but is also a strict and powerful leader.

Who could contrast this new Cyclops other than his brother, Alex Summers, aka Havok.

His powers work a bit differently than Scott's.
His powers work a bit differently than Scott’s.

Alex was not as fortunate to be taken in by Xavier and given a seat at the front of the first class of X-Men. Alex found himself in foster care when his powers emerged. He absorbs cosmic radiation and can expel it from his body. He has trouble controlling the powers initially, much like his brother Scott, and his costume is outfitted to help support the power, also like his brother.

Just saying, not every hero wears a zebra pattern on their head and a big target on the chest for no reason. The circles are an indicator for how much power he has left before he needs to recharge.

Havok has been an integral part to various teams over the year, namely X-Factor, and while he has clashed with X-Men in terms of their ideals, he’s always on the side of the good guys. Readers picking up comics today can find Havok alongside Captain America, Thor, Wolverine, and Rogue as a part of the Uncanny Avengers (or the Avengers Unity Squad as they are titled in the book). In it, we see Alex in direct opposition to Cyclops and becoming the new face of the mutant community. See his position as a leader in the page below.

The team goes onto fight more apocalyptic threats and in it, we see Alex struggle and succeed to lead the team, with the support of good ol’ Cap America himself.

FIGHT!

These two are on separate teams most of the time, so when would they have time to fight?

Oh wait, I forgot. How about often enough? Though not as bad as some other marvel sibling, these brothers have found themselves at odds when their missions bump into each other.

Scott is a mutant who has a very simplistic power that is centered on his level of control. He can be as precise as he chooses to be with his beams, using his tactical prowess to shoot at the right time. However, when pushed, Cyclops becomes a force to be reckoned with. At his best, even Wolverine is speechless.

Don't get on his bad side and never make fun of the visor.
Don’t get on his bad side and never make fun of the visor.

On the other hand, Alex has also trained and has had more of a diverse history of teams. Having some influence from being raised by foster parents as opposed to being brought into Xavier’s school and even dealing with an alternate future, Havok has seen his share of war and adversity.

Havok's power can be overwhelming, even to Captain America.
Havok’s power can be overwhelming, even to Captain America.

He sometimes resents Cyclops role as a model X-Man and this factor still remains with him today, as he’s seen his brother in his youth and in his current form all at once. Alex’s powers have been claimed by Mister Sinister and various others to potentially exceed those of his older brother, however, this makes no difference. So what’s the catch 22 with these brothers?

Well, for Scott and Alex (and to some extent, Vulcan, another Summers brother), their powers don’t effect it other. Scott’s powers manifested as a child when the two brothers fell out of a plane crash that consumed their parents. Alex’s power didn’t emerge until later, when he was in danger under the care of his foster family. The blood line they share negates the effects of their powers.

So with all this to consider, we’re going to think about this for a bit. And for all you readers, let us know. Vote down below and next Blood Battle, we’ll reveal the winner for this matchup. Thanks for reading and make sure to check out our great articles here on Nerdswole!
