ICYMI: The Pokémon Super Bowl Commerical

The big game usually has a lot of really creative, fun, and quirky commercials. It’s become a bit of a show in and of itself to simply watch the biggest game in football to see the ads between the game action. It isn’t unheard of for games (usually mobile games though) to get in on the action, but usually it is bigger tech companies, foods, and movies that really show up on these ads. So that’s what makes this ad special, Nintendo appears to be releasing a Pokémon ad, which is kind of incredible, because it’s not even for the whole company, just the single franchise. So let’s check out the Pokémon Super Bowl Commercial.

I really love that there is such a wide audience being targeted here. Of course, a lot of the main subjects are young kids, but there are obvious throwbacks to fans of the first generation of the hit franchise, such as having “Like No One Ever Was” above the doorway. Some have called the ad cheesy, but I’m a big fan of the whole commercial, and really appreciated it for what it is. It’s not a specific ad for any particular game coming out (although you might argue it’s for Pokémon GO) it doesn’t specifically list any game, so to me it’s just a celebration of the franchise and its longevity which is a beautiful thing.

It doesn’t hurt that it made me look up Pokken and Pokémon GO’s release dates again though. I guess what they’re really asking is this:
body are you ready

Things to Love: 8 Bit Music Covers

One of the genres of Nerdom I like to touch up on from time to time is music in the pop culture we love. One of the great things about music is that it can be specifically catered to a certain project or can introduce something new, become a whole unique instrument.

Many people enjoyed 8-bit music in its niche, with games like Mega Man, Castlevania, and various other popular titles introducing new unique tunes.

While these tunes are familiar to many video gamers of all ages, creators and fans have taken it upon themselves to mesh 8-bit synth into newer games.

Sometimes, it works well when mixed with music from movies; paying tribute to the composers who make movies so memorable is a great way to breaking fully orchestrated pieces to simple melodies.

When your hear the TV themes, you think that these shows could be made in NES games had they existed in the 80s.

When blended with pop music, 8-bit brings out the hypnotizing, catchy compositions that you love without the fluff.

I’m a huge fans of retro fitted music and the remixes are endless. It’s a nostalgic joyride to hear an instrument that constructed countless childhoods being used to create something entirely new!

What songs would you love to hear 8bit style? Share your favorites on FacebookTwitter, Instagram, and Pinterest! I’ll being doing a feature in the future about more original work in the Chiptune genre!

While Halloween is fast approaching, it’s hard to ignore how each year the holiday madness begins earlier. Recently, there’s been a revival of Ugly Christmas Sweaters and the parties they invite. While many people go thrifting to find older sweaters that have been abandoned or donated, others use the power of the internet to find their dream sweater and boy are there tons.

This is a miniature sampling compared to the vast variety of movie, video games, tv, and pop culture designs out there. However, it seems that retro video games and sprite-work are favored, looking natural in the medium. To bring this article full circle, I have purchased one of my own, and by all means, it is glorious, comfy, and not too heavy.

The online world of art is crazy, expressive, random, and above all, beautiful. When you get artists who are passion and talent, it is incredible to see what works comes out of the woodwork. Daniel Kamarudin is an online artist whose work ranges in different genres; his work in the digital medium is spectacular and nothing short of dynamic and inspired.

ICYMI – Ocarina Of Time Meets Unreal Engine 4

Does the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time need another remake? Probably not, however, if it that remake looked like the video that we’re featuring, I think there may have to be some reconsidering. So let’s check out what happens when Ocarina of Time meets Unreal Engine 4, shall we?

Say what you want about the artist’s choice about the sounds and the camera movements, but you can’t deny your mind isn’t racing to think of different Zelda scenery you’d love to see created and rendered in this environment.

Whatever Nintendo has going on with the NX, it should be pretty safe to assume the hardware will be another step up. So even while being a step behind the other consoles in terms of graphics, it would have to be assumed Nintendo could potentially attempt a more graphically intensive undertaking such as using this engine. Which is pretty damn exciting if we could get the story/feel of a Zelda game in graphical beauty like this one.

That isn’t to say that Zelda games haven’t been beautiful in their own right. Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword were stylistically very beautiful games, but I would like to see what the experience of a Zelda game might be with more intense graphics. Only time will tell though, anyone got an Ocarina to make things move a little faster?

Cool Stuff: X-Men Playing Cards

In a lot of ways this article is half about how cool this stuff is and also an artist appreciation for the guy who made these cards. They are pretty damn cool. Of course there are probably an X-Men deck of cards out there already, but how many of them are made to actually look like the royals on regular playing decks? None as far as I know.

The artist/creator’s name is Mark Eastwood. His X-Men cards are the first that I’ve heard of his work, but he’s apparently done other work in a similar style before this. He actually has a line of Capcom cards as well.

Capcards_post

Part of me really hopes that he was a huge fan of X-Men vs. Street Fighter and he decided it was such a good game that it needed a different medium to battle it out in. Whether or not that’s the case, let’s just appreciate how clever and cool Eastwood’s work is.

PC_Xmen_photo_single_1b

You have to love that Wolverine is actually stabbing the heart on his card. Is it because he has so many heartbreaking stories? Or is it because he’s been a stone cold killer. It doesn’t really matter, it’s just a nice little extra detail, which I’m all for.

A lot to like, in Eastwood’s gallery. Including different categories as I mentioned earlier. Oh, and we also happened to have done a cool little history of Wolverine’s costumes if you’re interested.

ICYMI – The Jungle Book Trailer

We finally get a look at the live action remake of the classic 1967 movie The Jungle Book, lots of rumors have flown around about this movie and what it would be like but now we finally get a first look. Let’s check out The Jungle Book trailer.

First of all, let’s just talk about how pretty every damn shot looked in that trailer. Holy crap, as far as trailers go, that is some of the crispier effects I’ve seen. Couple this with the fact that none of this movie is shot on location, and all of the animals in this movie are created by CGI, I’m thoroughly impressed with just the look of the movie so far.

Next, let’s talk about that voice cast. Jesus, that is a stacked cast, and even though we only get to hear Scarlett Johansson’s voice, who was an interesting twist on Kaa the Python, I’d imagine there is a lot of great things to come with the rest of that voice cast.

I also love the little whistling at the end of the trailer. Now, depending on how you feel about Jon Favreau and his movies, and how you feel about remakes of classics, you may or may not like the trailer. Personally, I’m largely impressed with how good the movie looks, and am a fan of every actor in the cast except for Neel Sethi (who plays Mowgli), which I haven’t seen enough from to judge, so i’ll be watching and listening for news tidbits about The Jungle Book.

/Film also has a great recap of a twitter Q&A from Jon Favreau.
