ICYMI: This Hawkeye Fan Film is Super Charming

Many of you may know Hawkeye from Jeremy Renner’s portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, comic book fans may know a very beloved and famous run of Matt Fraction and David Aja on the Archer part-time Avenger. He’s famously called HawkGuy because Fraction’s son couldn’t correctly pronounce Hawkeye, and it just happened to personify this beloved run on the character.

This comic was about Hawkeye just being a regular guy and not so much about his big time as an Avenger. How he’s a street level hero sometimes, but also just a regular dude with a bunch of regular dude problems. That’s enough prefacing right? Yeah, let’s check out the Hawkeye Fan Film.

I really love that they really capture the essence of the characters and the way they were written in this run by Fraction. The filmmakers also do a great job of capturing the style a comic book like this would be read, because they make very conscious choices about the way David Aja made his panels and frames and did similar edits and camera shots. Overall, I just really appreciate the work done by One Riot Ranger Productions. All that being said it’s still a fan film, so if you don’t like some rough production here and there, don’t watch, but I’d say it’s a good bit of work and HawkGuy fans will definitely enjoy.

ICYMI: The Pokémon Super Bowl Commerical

The big game usually has a lot of really creative, fun, and quirky commercials. It’s become a bit of a show in and of itself to simply watch the biggest game in football to see the ads between the game action. It isn’t unheard of for games (usually mobile games though) to get in on the action, but usually it is bigger tech companies, foods, and movies that really show up on these ads. So that’s what makes this ad special, Nintendo appears to be releasing a Pokémon ad, which is kind of incredible, because it’s not even for the whole company, just the single franchise. So let’s check out the Pokémon Super Bowl Commercial.

I really love that there is such a wide audience being targeted here. Of course, a lot of the main subjects are young kids, but there are obvious throwbacks to fans of the first generation of the hit franchise, such as having “Like No One Ever Was” above the doorway. Some have called the ad cheesy, but I’m a big fan of the whole commercial, and really appreciated it for what it is. It’s not a specific ad for any particular game coming out (although you might argue it’s for Pokémon GO) it doesn’t specifically list any game, so to me it’s just a celebration of the franchise and its longevity which is a beautiful thing.

It doesn’t hurt that it made me look up Pokken and Pokémon GO’s release dates again though. I guess what they’re really asking is this:
body are you ready

ICYMI – Thor and Vision Fight in this Age of Ultron Deleted Scene

I’m aware that not everyone is a fan of Avengers: Age of Ultron but by and large at Nerd Swole, we enjoyed it. That’s not to say it’s not without its kinks, and there are things left out that leave us wondering. For example, this deleted scene would have been a very interesting addition to the film that I think could always use more rifts between superheroes. Anyway, let’s watch Thor and Vision fight in this Age of Ultron deleted scene before we discuss it.

Firstly, it’s always a good bit of fun to see how much things change with special effects put in, and this clip is delightfully cheesy with its unfinished CGI.

It is also interesting to think how much this fight would have changed the way the audience would have seen the Vision. Would people consider him a character that was a legitimate threat and aiding Ultron? Or would have the Vision been seen as a character who went through an character development, because he was born in chaos and became the docile and calm hero he ends the movie as?

This scene could have changed a lot about the movie; for better or worse, I’m not sure, but it is definitely fun to think about. On top of this, the clip also features a power of Vision’s (phasing, when Cap throws the shield at him) we don’t see otherwise in the film, and shows that he can take fights even with the God of Thunder and have no scratches. We obviously find out that Vision is an incredibly powerful being throughout the movie, but this would have simply added to it.

On another note, this is a really good lesson on editing. Check out how the fight is cut out by watching the original and see the transition.

Ah, it is always fun to think how different a movie would be with its deleted scenes.

ICYMI – Lightsaber Duel at the World Fencing Championship

I don’t know much about fencing aside from what I’ve seen in video games (shoutouts to Soul Calibur) and television/movies. However, it’s easy to see that it takes a very high level of mastery to get to the top level as with many other sports and crafts. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that when two high level fencers work with a choreographer to make a light saber fight you know you’re going to probably see something pretty awesome. You can watch the original here. However, I much prefer the “fixed” version of the lightsaber duel at the World Fencing Championship.

If you ended up watching both versions you definitely know how much more special the version with light saber effects and John Williams’ score was. There isn’t much to say other than I’m impressed and loved the work put into this. Kudos to the fencing school that put this together and I hope they do more, I’m sure it only helps to get the school noticed and up enrollment.

ICYMI – Star Wars: The Force Awakens International Trailer (New Footage!)

Well this is pretty much the best kind of surprise isn’t it? JJ Abrams has been quoted a few times saying that the last trailer released was going to be all that was being released before the movie aside from some TV spots. Well, that’s definitely not true, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens international trailer has new footage and new narration as well. Let’s check it out.

Whoa, there is a lot to absorb there. This trailer seems to be much more focused on Rey, and that’s interesting, but there also seems to be a lot of focus on her family as well. There are of course many fan theories about where/who she comes from, but the main one floating around is that she is a Solo. This doesn’t necessarily have anything that would push that idea more than the last trailer, but it’s worth pondering while watching this trailer.

There is more footage of Kylo Ren in general just being more menacing in this trailer, and that’s always going to be a plus. Of course, there is still no Luke, so that will only boost the possibility of the Luke and Kylo Ren theories.

Anyway, just enjoy the new footage and see if you’ve got the eagle eyes to spot something no one else has. And if you want to see the character posters, you can see those here.

ICYMI: Stephen Colbert Guesses The Plot Of The Force Awakens

Stephen Colbert is a pretty famous nerd, he has shown it on numerous occasions, and especially in regards to the Tolkien novels. If you haven’t seen him wreck James Franco about The Silmarillion it’s worth a watch.

On top of that he’s also shown he’s a pretty big Star Wars fan when he discussed Kylo Ren’s crossguard lightsaber.

Well now that we’re caught up with some of Stephen Colbert’s nerdy endeavors, let’s just show this clip about Colbert’s guess at the Star Wars: The Force Awakens plot. It’s a pretty overarching plot, and not a ton of specifics, but I guess there is a possibility of a SPOILER if some of this stuff turns out to be right.

If he turns out to be exactly right, I don’t think I’d even be mad to know the plot because that sounds awesome. Anyway, it makes a lot of sense for this to be the overall theme of the trilogy, but would make it quite difficult to make sequels were it all to work out in the plot of The Force Awakens. Anyway, it was a fun video, and it’s just adding to the hype train. Of course we’re still about two months out, but it’s still getting closer!

Star Wars: The Hype is Real

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

By now, you’ve all seen the new Star Wars trailer.  We think it’s simply amazing how a trailer could deliver bits of footage from the movie, yet hardly divulge the plot.  It inspires fans of all ages to speculate on the story and make them want to see this movie now.  From what we’ve seen, tickets to opening night are selling out and the movie isn’t due until December 18th!  A few days prior, the official movie poster was released.

Where’s Luke Skywalker?  Is he dead?  Did he switch over to the Dark Side?  Is he the new Yoda, living in exile somewhere?  In the previous trailer, we saw what we could assume is Luke’s hand, resting on R2-D2. We’ve noticed that either someone is being pursued or there’s an epic airship battle going on.  It’s hard to fathom the amount of action packed into this movie.  What we really want to know is who are the new red lightsaber wielders.  Secondly, who’s commanding the Storm Troopers in the following shot.

These Stroom Troopers look polished and new, like an Apple product.

Like many of you, Nerd Swole was left wondering, where is Luke Skywalker?  We’ve heard his voice in the previous trailer and assume he’s the cloaked figure putting his hand on R-2 D-2.

Perhaps Han Solo plays an integral part to the plot since we see him multiple times.  He’s probably going to be the direct connection to the original trilogy and frequently piloting the Millennium Falcon  Blink, and you’ll miss Princess Leia in his arms.

Of course, no Star Wars movie is complete without an epic lightsaber battle. This looks rather promising.

ICYMI – Hydra Has An Image Problem

While I Imagine some people are still divided on Agents of SHIELD, most would argue that the show ramped up significantly in the latter half of season 1, and season 2 by all accounts was an extremely enjoyable and fun (with many somber moments) ride. So if you’re not watching Agents of SHIELD, you should be. However, you don’t need to watch the show to know that Hydra became somewhat of a larger issue during Captain America: Civil War, and apparently Hydra has an image problem. Anyways, the following clip is significantly funnier if you watch Agents of SHIELD, but probably still worth a good laugh or two if you don’t, and just watch the movies. WARNING: HUGE SPOILERS FOR THE SHOW AGENTS OF SHIELD

What if instead of two eye patches Coulson, we went with floating head May, or axe for a hand Mack? Kidding, obviously the people at Marvel had some fun with this video, but it was still pretty entertaining nonetheless. This video simply adds to the shame that Ward had to turn out to be such a bastard with an incredibly traumatizing past, because Brett Dalton seems like a pretty fun guy and you’d like to cheer for him (and plenty of people do hail Hydra because of him), but Ward has done some really messed up stuff. He’s definitely one of the reasons the show has become such compelling television.

I’m also pleasantly surprised that Joe Quesada had good enough acting ability to not make this whole video very awkward. Kudos to him.

ICYMI – Ocarina Of Time Meets Unreal Engine 4

Does the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time need another remake? Probably not, however, if it that remake looked like the video that we’re featuring, I think there may have to be some reconsidering. So let’s check out what happens when Ocarina of Time meets Unreal Engine 4, shall we?

Say what you want about the artist’s choice about the sounds and the camera movements, but you can’t deny your mind isn’t racing to think of different Zelda scenery you’d love to see created and rendered in this environment.

Whatever Nintendo has going on with the NX, it should be pretty safe to assume the hardware will be another step up. So even while being a step behind the other consoles in terms of graphics, it would have to be assumed Nintendo could potentially attempt a more graphically intensive undertaking such as using this engine. Which is pretty damn exciting if we could get the story/feel of a Zelda game in graphical beauty like this one.

That isn’t to say that Zelda games haven’t been beautiful in their own right. Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword were stylistically very beautiful games, but I would like to see what the experience of a Zelda game might be with more intense graphics. Only time will tell though, anyone got an Ocarina to make things move a little faster?

ICYMI – The Jungle Book Trailer

We finally get a look at the live action remake of the classic 1967 movie The Jungle Book, lots of rumors have flown around about this movie and what it would be like but now we finally get a first look. Let’s check out The Jungle Book trailer.

First of all, let’s just talk about how pretty every damn shot looked in that trailer. Holy crap, as far as trailers go, that is some of the crispier effects I’ve seen. Couple this with the fact that none of this movie is shot on location, and all of the animals in this movie are created by CGI, I’m thoroughly impressed with just the look of the movie so far.

Next, let’s talk about that voice cast. Jesus, that is a stacked cast, and even though we only get to hear Scarlett Johansson’s voice, who was an interesting twist on Kaa the Python, I’d imagine there is a lot of great things to come with the rest of that voice cast.

I also love the little whistling at the end of the trailer. Now, depending on how you feel about Jon Favreau and his movies, and how you feel about remakes of classics, you may or may not like the trailer. Personally, I’m largely impressed with how good the movie looks, and am a fan of every actor in the cast except for Neel Sethi (who plays Mowgli), which I haven’t seen enough from to judge, so i’ll be watching and listening for news tidbits about The Jungle Book.

/Film also has a great recap of a twitter Q&A from Jon Favreau.
