ICYMI – King Kong vs Godzila

King Kong vs Godzilla?

In case you missed it, King Kong has made his way to Warner Bros. studio. That same studio is home to Godzilla so an epic showdown is bound to happen.  There is no set date as each monster is starring in their respective films to be released in 2017 and 2018.

King Kong and Godzilla have fought in film before but that was in 1962.  With all the technological advancements in filming, the future film is sure to be a visual effects pleaser.

Barring all biological accuracies, Nerd Swole wonders who would emerge victorious.

In the 1962 film, both beasts fall off a cliff into the ocean and only King Kong emerges.  As the giant gorilla leaves, the Japan Self-Defense Forces speculates that Godzilla definitely survived.

ICYMI – Netflix Jessica Jones Premiere Announcement/Teaser

I’m sure plenty of us are going through withdrawal of some Marvel Netflix action with Daredevil being binged way back in April, but we’re finally getting the smallest look at what we might be getting from Jessica Jones. There is no footage, and it’s really trippy, but it is likely a hint at what types of things we’ll be seeing from the show. Let’s check out the Jessica Jones premiere announcement.

Well then. The word trippy certainly comes to mind after watching it. I personally think it’s really cool, I’m getting a lot of cool vibes from it, a little True Detective and a little Daredevil. If this is the opening theme, I’d be completely okay with that. I think the more you watch it the more cool little intricacies you notice, and I’m a big fan of that.

In terms of the show, I don’t know that this tells us much about the show other than we could possibly finally have a Marvel product that is more mystical/magical. Which would be a bit of a surprise seeing as Jessica Jones isn’t really that type of character. I guess we’ll have to wait until November 20th, 2015 to find out!

Apple TV – New Gaming Platform?

Yesterday, Apple introduced new additions to its line of products.  While most people were set on learning about the new iPhone, Nerd Swole was intrigued by the new Apple TV.  The product is being promoted for video streaming, music, sports and even online shopping.  However, our focus is on its gaming capabilities.  While it can’t rival or replace an Xbox One/PS4, it has the potential to expand the gaming audience.  For the first time, it will have its own App Store.  Therefore, third party developers are welcome to bring new content to the table and potentially become a family-friendly gaming platform.  On the other hand, the App Store does impose limits as to what content goes on there so expect an abundance of family-friendly titles.

Now in terms of family gaming, Nintendo has been a power house for years.  Some have speculated that the Apple TV will take customers away from Nintendo’s audience because just about everyone plays Candy Crush.  That’s simply not true.  Nintendo makes games with intriguing and complex endeavors that caters to its most serious gamers.  Plus, Apple TV is pretty similar to the Wii/Wii U in terms of motion based gaming and the remote.

Wii U or Apple TV for family gaming?
Wii U or Apple TV for family gaming?

Apple never really promoted its new TV as a gaming platform.  It’s simply an upgrade/alternative to the many video streaming devices out there.  Siri is a nice addition if you rather talk to your TV and tell it what you content you want to see.  It also has the nice capability of checking for content availability across Netflix, Hulu, etc.  It’s hard to imagine anyone doing their online shopping through Apple TV but it’s the effort to appeal to everyone in the family.

The new Apple TV is set to release in October, just in time for the early holiday shoppers.  Will you be testing out its gaming abilities?  Do you think it can really add to the gaming audience?

ICYMI – The Martian/Wall-E Trailer Mashup

Anyone that follows Nerd Swole knows by now, I’m a bit of a fan of trailer mashups. I enjoy seeing what some movies might look like with a different genre, what some movies might be like if they had added a certain actor, or I’m also just a fan of good editing. This is in a way an example of all three of those things. There are spoilers for the movie Wall-E and voiceovers from The Martian trailer, so if you’re not interested in seeing either of those things, avoid this Martian/Wall-E trailer mashup.

While both movies are science fiction, it still serves to make a pretty good mashup of two films I assume will be fairly different (The Martian isn’t out yet).  It’s so fascinating and intriguing to see a movie like Wall-E that was quiet for a large portion of the movie have the crazy, chaotic, and fun moments of The Martian trailer added. A good bit of fun comes from how believable the edit is, if I hadn’t seen Wall-E or the trailer for The Martian, I could honestly be sold that this was the movie, and that is just more credit to the creator. Great work Tony D, looking forward to more.

ICYMI – The Shannara Chronicles Trailer

Amid all the shenanigans that happened at MTV’s Video Music Awards, including some unscripted low blows and more, MTV also debuted a trailer for The Shannara Chronicles based off of Terry Brooks’ fantasy novels. Yes, reader, we are on absolutely the same page in wondering if MTV can make something that doesn’t involve over the top teen drama with some supernatural creatures or reality shows. However, it is worth noting that the source material is pretty plentiful and popular by those who have read it, and the executive producer is Jon Favreau, and the show was developed by former Smallville showrunners, Miles Millar and Al Gough. Take that as you will considering how polarizing Smallville can be and Jon Favreau’s work with Iron Man, but also Cowboys and Aliens. So skepticism seems pretty fair. Anyways, let’s check out the trailer for the The Shannara Chronicles.

To be completely honest, I’m very impressed by the production value of what’s been shown here. The acting seems fairly on point, and nothing seems forced and the trailer actually creates a fairly compelling reason to tune in.

And yet, somehow MTV still makes me wonder if they just superfunded a trailer and let the rest of the show wing it. If this weren’t by MTV and were just a trailer I saw, I’d probably be very excited about the show, but for now, we’ll leave it as cautious optimism.

ICYMI: Street Fighter V R. Mika Reveal Trailer

There are a lot of reasons to be hyped for Street Fighter V, the beta has shown us a lot, and the videos the developers have made are also very interesting. We talked about characters we hoped for here, and while it didn’t necessarily pan out, Street Fighter V has added a very interesting character in Rainbow Mika (usually abbreviated to R. Mika). This iteration of her interestingly reminds me a lot of Power Girl, for ahem obvious reasons, it’s also a bit funny that when Power Girl was rumored for Injustice she was rumored to be a grappler, similar to how Mika has worked in the past. Anyways, let’s get to the Street Fighter V R. Mika reveal trailer.

There is a lot going on there. Let’s first talk about how she’s got a little Marvel vs Capcom going on there calling for an assist there during some of her moves. Which I think is really a badass addition.

This might be bad news for some of the other grapplers that have previously appeared in Street Fighter, but by and large I expect a pretty positive response from Street Fighter fans. Overall, the character just looks like a bunch of fun, and Street Fighter V  is shaping up more and more to be a worthy successor.

ICYMI: “Fant4stic Trailer: Arrested Development Edition”

Reviews for the most recent Fantastic Four haven’t been kind. It actually even made one of our writers question whether or not the comic book genre in film/TV could collapse on itself. So while that has been a rough ride for FOX/Josh Trank/The first family in comics, that doesn’t mean you can’t find some comedy in it. And who better to find some comedy in a pretty rough situation than Tobias Funke? From YouTube user TVJunkie, here is “Fant4stic Trailer: Arrested Development Edition.”

Many fans were divided about season 4 of Arrested Development but this mashup definitely brings up some funny moments and highlights. There’s no denying the reviews on the most recent iteration of the Fantastic Four though, essentially most people are saying it’s hot garbage. Which is a shame, because they’ve had some really dynamic stories throughout comic book history. I suppose we’ll just have to enjoy this mashup until we get a movie that’s actually worth something.

ICYMI – “Do You Wanna Kill The Batman?” Frozen Parody

You might be saying this is a little old, and you’d be correct. The original version of this “Do You Wanna Kill The Batman?” came out in February of 2014, but this YouTube user added a small animation to it that has made it that much more impressive. Here is the original video with just the song first:

That was pretty awesome right? How about we throw in some Frozen style animation as well though! That’s what this animator, Michael Smith, has done.

The animation is very short and definitely leaves you wanting more, but the work that we do get to see is really quite impressive. For what it is, it’s a very fun clip showing some very skilled animation, and for that, we tip our hats off to you Mr. Michael Smith.

However, who else is wondering if Margot Robbie can sing?

ICYMI: Rocket Jump’s “The Rush”

Rocket Jump have a history of making incredibly well done videos that feature video games. This video takes on the universe of arguably one of the greatest games of all time, StarcraftStarcraft is probably the most famous Real Time Strategy game ever, and for good reason. It was one of the first games to really make it possible for a professional to make a living off of playing. Without getting too much into it, there are three playable races in the game and this video focuses on the Terran (humans) and the Zerg (alien bugs more or less), and what life on a Terran colony might be like.

Well if you never felt bad for doing a Zerg rush before, I’m sure you do now.

It’s always been said that Starcraft with its rich and storied mythos would make a great movie, and this short proves just that. I’m always super impressed with Rocket Jump’s work and this isn’t any different. In a lot of ways this was so well done because of the things they didn’t show. While the effects are awesome, it was the creepy feeling and the scariness of the unknown that made this video so enjoyable.

ICYMI: R Rated Harry Potter

While the Harry Potter films got quite dark toward the end of their 8 movie run they never quite crossed over into R Rated territory. Interestingly enough there are actually some pretty serious moments in the PG rated Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, but the movie stayed PG. Anyway, the Fine Bros decided to create a new series which I’m sure we’ll be pulling from regularly about what a movie might be like if it were R Rated or if it were G Rated. So let’s check out their R Rated Harry Potter, obviously there is a lot of language, blood, and other mature content.

Did I mention blood, guts, language, and more mature content? It’s an interesting and funny take on a beloved franchise. It’s highly and incredibly unlikely we’ll ever see an R Rated Harry Potter, so this short animation was pretty fun to take a quick look at what that might be like. I’m not saying there won’t be a reboot, because let’s be honest, there has to eventually be a reboot, and it simply makes too much sense to hook audiences and have them grow up with the films from a very young age.

However, we did see an incredibly adult Power Rangers short film earlier this year, so who knows, maybe we’ll get one of those for Harry Potter after awhile? Until then, we’ll just have to settle for saying “How do you like your coffee now Uncle Vernon?!”
