The Acapella Cover of the X-Men Theme You Didn’t Know You Needed.

  1. That’s an awesome Gambit shirt.
  2. Credit for genderbending Rogue, but I wish she could have done a little something like the nice little easter eggs of the others.
  3. The easter eggs are great, Magneto shaking the mic, Gambit and the cards, Wolverine poking, and Cyclops at the end with the lens flare.
  4. My first time visiting the Warp Zone youtube channel, some pretty cool stuff. Not as badass as Smooth McGroove, but different enough to care.

Thoughts About Stuff: Is 2016 X-Men’s Year?

It is an interesting thing isn’t it? To consider the X-Men franchise separate from Marvel Studios, but we have to remember that they are in fact separate universes in this case. That being said, FOX has stated their case to attempt to dominate the superhero market in 2016 with 3 X-Men movies that year. No trailers/teasers out just yet, but they planted the flags for release dates for Deadpool, Gambit, and X-Men: Apocalypse.

It’s an interesting move to say the least, but to think that they will actually dominate the box office and the superhero movie market is a bit of a stretch considering the other heavy hitters coming out that year, Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Those films have been spoken about and discussed at length, lets see what FOX and the X-Men have going for them.

The film that’s been in limbo for quite some time and was finally greenlit will feature Ryan Reynolds returning as Wade Wilson. The infamous test footage leaked and the internet was set ablaze. You can see it in all of it’s gruesome glory here:

It’s slated to be released February 12th, 2016, just in time for… Valentines day? Anyway, I’m not sure people like Deadpool as much as they think they like Deadpool. Yes, he has a very dedicated group of comic book readers/fans and is very funny when he breaks the fourth wall with sarcasm and other bits, but does he appeal to a general public as much as the other X-Men? Probably not.

The character in a lot of ways is meant to be annoying and crazy, and that could rub a lot of people who are unfamiliar with the character the wrong way. FOX really needs to hit this one out of the park to really have any belief that they can have another solid property without requiring Wolverine to be in it and I’m not completely sure Deadpool is the guy to do so. I’d be happy to be proven wrong with a solid film though.

X-Men: Apocalypse

The likeliest of the three films to make a big splash. The sequel to the super popular X-Men: Days of Future Past has the most recognizable name and the biggest names in the cast. There isn’t a reason to believe that people won’t go see this film, it has the huge names and will probably get the biggest marketing push of the 3 films.

All of the details for all films are thin, but the 70’s cast of Days of Future Past will be present and the main X-Men in the film. I don’t know that this film will be as good as DoFP because DoFP played a lot on nostalgia showing the old X-Men and spent a lot of time essentially erasing and dealing with the lesser films of the franchise (X3, X-Men Origins). However, it is completely possible that this film also outdoes DoFP considering we’ll still have Director Bryan Singer and Singer has given reason to show faith in his work on the X-Men movies so I expect X-Men films to continue being the proud tentpole for FOX.

Ah, the film that was just announced. It will star Channing Tatum and will release on October 7th, 2016. Other details are sparse, but this I applaud FOX for listening to the fans who have demanded X-Men that haven’t really been featured heavily in the X-Men movies.

Tatum has stepped up (no pun intended) quite a bit as an actor. He’s shown raw sex appeal and bankability for quite sometime, but he recently showed gritty and more serious acting ability in Foxcatcher. I think Tatum will do fine as Remy LeBeau, but it will always be up to the producer/director/writers/studio to ultimately decide what product they make.

All that being said, it’s a great time to be a nerd, with all of these characters being brought to the big screen. To answer my original question, I still have my doubts about FOX releasing 3 X-Men films in 1 year and taking on the previously mentioned Juggernauts (again, no pun intended), but FOX is certainly trying their hardest to take a bigger slice of the superhero movie pie. Basically, quality over quantity, but who knows, maybe FOX makes 3 quality movies and everyone throws out their Iron Man masks and Batman cowls. Hah, just kidding.

Superhero Teams That Get No Respect

There’s never a shortage of a teams when you’re talking about Superheroes. Avengers, Teen Titans, Justice League, X-Men, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, B.P.R.D., even Team Avatar! With the flood of these powerful groups, there’s bound to be a forgotten few. Here’s a couple you may have forgot or never even heard of.

The Warriors (Ultimate Spider-Man comics)

Ultimate Spider-Man’s original run had young Peter Parker going up against just about everyone. From the Sinister Six and Hulk to the spot and Venom, Spidey just never caught a break. And while he’s had many team ups, the odd team of Moon Knight, Iron Fist, and Shang-Chi can’t be matched. It was the street level smack down that only lasted a few issues. For more of that street level goodness, you can read Shadowland or wait anxiously for Daredevil and the rest of the Marvel Netflix series.

Young Justice (Young Justice TV Show)

A team of Teen Titans, Young Justice broke the mold by spitting right in the face of what it meant to be a sidekick versus a main hero. The team of young heroes formed together out of convenience more than unanimous decision, and had been thrown up against the worst of the worst. Red Tornado’s family, AMAZO, Deathstroke, heck even a whole Injustice League (Joker, Count Vertigo, Black Adam, Poison Ivy, and more!).  The team was constantly lied to, built up their own base of operations, and survived countless surprise attacks. Unfortunately, toy sales for the team were not ideal and Cartoon Network pulled the plug. If you ask me, they are the most deserving of a third season.

Justice Guild (Justice League TV Show)

The Justice League’s Justice Society of America, this team was meant to encapsulate the Golden Age heroes that would inspired the Justice League via comics. These heroes mimic Golden Age Heroes such as the Flash, Black Cat, and Superman. Unfortunately, the team is lost when they discover they have been doomed all along and sacrifice themselves to save the JLA. It would have been nice if the Justice League were able to travel to this universe again and save these heroes from their world.

Legion Lost (New 52)

legion lost

While there a plenty of Legion teams, Legion Lost is a team that captured my attention instantly. A team that we are introduced to mid mission, they are flung into the 21st century after a crucial mission goes wrong. Left stranded out of time and with failure on their heads, the Legion finds a way to track down their original objective while trying to find a way home. With a hybrid creature who makes teleportation holes (Portal style), a radioactive kid on the verge exploding (only to be contained in a suit), a young Wolverine, a double agent shape-shifted, and a leader who can’t act in charge but still uses his voice as his main power (Black Canary style), this rag tag team of heroes is the Teen Titans I’ve always wanted. Unfortunately, as is the way with most new 52 DC books, it was cancelled after 16 issues. Hopefully we’ll see the team regroup after the big Converge event of 2015.

Umbrella Academy (Umbrella Academy Comics)

The “what” Academy? This team of unexpected, super-powered kids, were all randomly born at the same time when a wrestler was giving the finishing blow in a cosmic boxing match. The women who gave birth to these children showed no signs of pregnancy beforehand. 7 of these children are taken under the guidance of Sir Reginald Hargreeves, an adventurer who molds the super-powered youngsters into a team of heroes. Yes, this is all the first few pages.

The team has two books and writer Gerard Way (lead vocals for My Chemical Romance) is supposedly working on a third and fourth volume. More people should know about this dysfunctional team, as they are the most refreshing team on this list and in the modern era of comics.

Pre-2012 Avengers (Marvel Cinematic Universe)

In the end, they're just a bunch of people arguing over the fate of the universe.
In the end, they’re just a bunch of people arguing over the fate of the universe.

I’ll have to thank Brian for reminding me that only comic book people cared about the Avengers before the movie blew everyone way.

Did you really care about Thor before Chris Hemsworth requested another coffee? Did you really care for a Captain America movie, knowing it was just a lead-up for the Avengers (just because that type of movie had never been done for superheroes)? The answer was no. Before Iron Man, the world wanted more of Christopher Nolan’s Batman series and for a better Spider-Man, a better X-Men, and a better Fantastic Four. It wanted more Transformers, more Avatar, and a completely new Superman movie. The world was not ready for Joss Whedon’s Avengers and now every kid wants to be Iron Man (or at least have his suit) or Captain America (modern Winter Soldier version) for Halloween.

Before this movie (and Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe), the Avengers had been disbanded, raged a Civil War, and fought off a Skrull Invasion, all under the lead of Brian Michael Bendis (among many great writers and artists). Bendis now successfully helms the X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy (among plenty of other books), but his contributions to the Avengers have paved the way to success and interest in Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Honorable Mentions go to teams I’m not fully informed on

  • Doom Patrol
  • Suicide Squad (They’re slowly getting the respect they’ve earned with books and movies left and right).
  • Challengers of the Unknown
  • Fearless Defenders
  • Plus many more…

The 10 Most Popular Nerd Swole Articles of 2014

2014 was a pretty cool year for Nerd Swole, we got more guest writers, we hit a new threshold in subscribers/likes, and we just put out more articles in general. While it was more demanding and sometimes very difficult to draw ideas out to write about, it was worth it because we got great comments/interaction and it even inspired people to write for us. We did a few giveaways and you guys seemed to really enjoy those, and we’re always happy to have more people added to our little community. Since I anticipate a growing community, I figured I’d list all of the most popular articles.

We’re working on our NerdSwole Mailbag, it’s taking a little longer than anticipated just because it’s the first time and some kinks need to be worked out. 2014 has been really great, but here’s hoping 2015 is an even better year for Nerd Swole. I expect 2015 to be full of fun, great ideas, new writers, videos, and even more giveaways!

Spider-Man’s Cinematic Future

It seems that in comics, movies, and apparently with movie studios, Spider-Man never seems to catch a break.

I’ve been waiting for the Spider-Man Sony Hack news to settle down before making some assessments on Spider-Man’s future.

We’ve been over the Amazing Spider-Man 2 in depth, but with the Spider-Universe out of control, I have a few ideas on how to fix this whole debacle, depending how things go.

If Spider-Man sticks with Sony…

Sony knows it’s hanging onto a huge money maker, even if the latest film failed to meet both critical and financial expectations. They were a lot of movie plans initially announced and I’m just as confused as ever, so let’s tackle them.

Ultimate Spider-Man featured one of the best Venom and Spider-Man stories of all time, and luckily, the game based off the series, used the storyline as a jumping on point. You can check it out in this video here. Basically, Peter and Eddie were friends when they were kids (much like Harry and Peter in the movie) and their fathers worked together on the symbiote. It’s healing and adaptive properties were going to be used to cure cancer, but legal issues kept it from seeing the light of day. Spidey attempts to get the suit, gets corrupted, loses the suit, and Eddie finds the symbiote, learning about the previous owner. A movie using this story would benefit from the story being a year or two into Spider-Man’s heroic career. It would also provide a fresh take on Venom, instead of being solely a venom film (seriously, not a good idea).

Women of Spider-Man’s Life

I’m not sure what the idea was here. We’ve got Felicia Hardy, Aunt May, a dead Gwen, a cut out Mary Jane, and who knows who else. If the idea was to work a MC2 Spider-Girl into the mix, try out Spider-Gwen before it hits the comics, or even try a whole new type of film, who’s to say it can’t work? However, the idea doesn’t seems to be fleshed out in the slightest and I feel this may not come to fruition, much like using X-Men Origins: Magneto as a template for X-Men: First Class.

Page 1: Spider-Gwen's Origin on a single splash page.
Page 1: Spider-Gwen’s Origin on a single splash page.

Sinister Six

Now this is the big set-up of Amazing Spider-Man 2, which would be exciting if the villains hadn’t already been ruined. Electro’s is either dead, or is basically unbeatable, both which leave his spot vacant (Electro’s spotlight began and ended with ASM2. Goblin is likely to be on the team, although usually, he doesn’t usually get along with others. Rhino will be on the team, but all these other members will find a spot. Which leads me to think the approach of the movie will be similar to Assault on Arkham, featuring the Suicide Squad. With Andrew Garfield’s lead in question, who knows what would be the plot for these villains to get together. And without other heroes to fight (unlike Ultimate Six, where the Sinister Six went up against the Avengers when Spidey couldn’t contain it), it’s tough to see where these misfits could go.

If Marvel Studios gets their shot with Spidey…

…the heavenly light will reign down on the comic book community and the world. Smooth sailing ahead.

Thank you, Marvel.

Marvel’s various attempts at a deal really make for some strange cameos, as opposed to starring roles. With that in mind, there are a few ways it could work out.

Peter Parker: Unmasked in Civil War

Basically, everyone wants the following to happen because of how crucially important this is in Spider-Man’s life.

This is the emotional, political, philosophical crux of Civil War. For who it matters the most, we find Spider-Man, one of the most vulnerable solo heroes, unmasking himself in support of Iron Man (Tony Stark) and the Superhero Registration Act. This directly opposes Captain America, one of Peter Parker’s idols. This tension is what has everyone excited for the possibility of Captain America 3: Civil War, along with several other incredibly revolutionary events that happen in Mark Millar’s Civil War.

There’s also the matter of sharing vs completely owning Spider-Man. If Marvel completely has control over the character, then everything will go well. However, if Sony chooses to retain Spider-Man, but solely allows for the cameo in the movie, then we may see a connected universe. This universe could have Spider-Man gone astray after the loss of Gwen Stacy. He may have lost more loved ones or become completely recluse. The scene from the end of ASM2 could have just been a preview of the upcoming movie and Civil War could explore the year Peter took off as Spider-Man.

What happened before this? Only time will tell.

There are a lot of possibilities for this one universe and Spider-Man’s inclusion / availability can truly change the whole movie.

Use Ultimate Comic Spider-Man (aka Miles Morales)

While Andrew Garfield and The Amazing Spider-Man took a lot of cues from the Ultimate universe, I think Spider-Man would need to be recast and detached from Sony’s Spider-Man universe. In the same way that we will have seen 2 Quicksilvers, Marvel Studios should use a Spider-Man separate from Garfield’s. In this case, I would argue using Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker (Yes, everyone is still hoping for Donald Glover to don the suit). The main reason for this is timing. See, in the Ultimate Universe, (SPOILERS) heroes have been around for a few years, have seen some devastation (Ultimatum), and heroes have fallen, namely Peter Parker. Miles finds powers in a similar fashion, but also has to adjust and prove himself in a world where heroes are willing to use manipulation as a tool and do what’s necessary over what’s right. (END SPOILERS) In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Miles could have received his powers and been inspired by the heroes around him to protect innocents. However, he would have a problem showing his face, unlike the Avengers, and this would be a great idea to explore in Captain America 3: Civil War.

Personally, I favor this last option, as it gives Marvel some breathing room, some leeway with the timeline, and can introduce another major player while having the freedom to establish a whole new history for our favorite web slinger. I think Marvel just wants Spider-Man in good hands, choosing not to make a solo movie for him, but establish his place among the Avengers (which are expanding exponentially, in case you haven’t noticed).

Awesome Things To Look Forward To In 2015

2014 is ending, and it has been a pretty awesome year in regards to nerd/geek pop culture type things. Epic happenings in gaming, movies, comic books, and so on and so forth. We got to see what many assumed a D-List comic book group become house hold names (Guardians of the Galaxy), there were significant expansions to the DC TV universe (Flash, Gotham, Constantine), we now have a female Thor, a black Captain America(Captain Falcon?), a super douchey Iron Man, the return of Peter Parker, and there were just a bunch of cool games that came out (Smash Bros, Dragon Age, Destiny, etc.)

And with all of that, I just wanted to list a few things coming in 2015 that are totally worth being excited about. Obviously there are a bunch more, consider this a quick fix.

Batman: Arkham Knight – 6/2/15

batman-arkham-knight-gamescom-3-jpgRocksteady’s final installation of the Arkham franchise. While a reviews were uneven for Arkham Origins, this will be the makers of Arkham Asylum and City, and that should be credentials enough to make anyone excited.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens – 12/18/15

It’s out of George Lucas’ hands, and JJ Abrams has rebooted another beloved franchise with pretty incredible success.

Xenoblade Chronicles X – Spring 2015

I’ve mentioned multiple times that I loved Xenoblade Chronicles and it is one of my favorite games of all time. So naturally, I’m looking forward to its spiritual sequel that includes giant badass mechs.

Mad Max: Fury Road 5/15/15

Basically I didn’t care, and then I saw the trailers, and then it looked awesome. Plus, Tom Hardy is a pretty cool dude.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – 2015

While i’m not really sold on the voice change for Snake, I can’t stay away from an MGS game. And goodness gracious look at those graphics.

Avengers: Age of Ultron – 5/1/15

I feel like this doesn’t really need a description.

Justice League: Throne of Atlantis – 1/27/15

DC’s next animated movie is looking to be a pretty good one. Look up the trailers when you get a chance. Plus, Aquaman getting some shine is pretty cool.

4 Super Hero Identities That Are Incredibly Suspect

Let’s start off with a question: Do you see anything wrong with this poster?

Some mega fans could make some arguments, but it took Deadpool’s Uncanny Avengers variant for me to truly understand what’s wrong with the incredibly, eye-popping image:

1387950_xlIsn’t that absurd? In a world where keeping your secret identity secret meant something…

Well, at least it used to.

…aren’t secret identities a major part of being a super hero? Well, some identities you can’t keep secret and, while  we love the heroes that try, some of these identities are laughably transparent.

Oliver Queen (Arrow)

Oliver-Queen-arrow-cw-34486914-1280-1024His name is Oliver Queen. For five years, he was trapped on an island and he didn’t think of one thing: put on a mask first. For the amount of times he has to take business calls, Oliver doesn’t hide has tracks that well. The stammering, the silly places, the terribly bad excuses; it’s clear no one ever trained Oliver under a lie detector. Bruce Wayne gets away with being a playboy millionaire by being an incredibly off-putting loner, but Oliver is surrounded by family, friends, ex-girlfriends, and associates he doesn’t care for. With that many people in your face, you need to become a better liar. Step up your game, Ollie.

Matt Murdock (Marvel Comics)

daredevil7preview1-1321666349Matt Murdock can’t just live a normal life. How he was supposed to with super senses, a ninja background, a high-profile law firm, and a notorious history with beautiful women is beyond me. Matt’s been to jail, been chased by the Daily Bugle, hunted in the streets, even attacked in his home. Everyone knows he is Daredevil and it’s a bit crazy he doesn’t go the Tony Stark way and work out things a bit differently.

Clark Kent (DC Comics)

Having recently read better Superman stories such as Birthright, I realized that there was a huge effort to make Clark Kent believable.

This moment needs to be in every Superman origin story.
This moment needs to be in every Superman origin story.

However, the overall idea for Clark Kent to be an identity would never fly with the effort Superman puts in. Glasses, change in posture, and hair styling wouldn’t fly past facial recognition scans, which would be common if he lived in a metropolis where he could be found. Investigating his knowledge of crimes in the city would lead back to news outlets and police reports, where he could be found suspect. I’ve just never seen how it’s so impossible for even Lois Lane to not catch the difference so early on.

Peter Parker (Amazing Spider-Man / Marvel Comics)

This scene with Aunt May may have had a lot of people laughing, but I rolled my eyes over how Aunt May looked past her clearly up to no good nephew. His greatest secret gets revealed to Gwen on his own, to her father in a chase scene, to the Lizard, and there didn’t even seem to be a reason to be wearing a mask.

However, in his comics, Peter is also running out of excuses. He’s notorious for being late and running out of a situation when things get hot. When Peter runs out, Spidey comes in, beats up the bad guy, and then they switch with little time in between, I have no idea how no one puts two and two together. Sure, he has to take pictures, but not always and that Parker luck seems all too convenient. You’re not fooling me, Petey.

Why does Nerdswole think this book is awesome to have?

The Ultimate Comics have been more hit than miss and many fans have loved the updated heroes in a setting where people can die and life has to move on, instead of everyone magically coming back to life. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has the Ultimate Universe to thank for plenty: the redesigned Nick Fury, a modern-day retelling (and modern outfits) for most of the avengers, and ultimately, this panel from an earlier Ultimates issue that truly explains Captain America’s stance on the word surrender. I’ll leave you with this panel and good luck in the giveaway!
